Weather a storm
By Li Ching-luen
WHEN THE INCESSANT rain gets us down, at least a bright, colorful umbrella should help cheer us up. A parasol is a useful companion, come rain or shine.
At the weekend if another rainstorm does not spoil it shoppers in Kowloon could go home feeling a little upbeat with one of many cheerful umbrellas created by a variety of designers.
Harbour City in Tsim Sha Tsui is offering a collection of umbrellas that depicts polka dots that appear like water droplets, clouds, faces of babies, and dogs (Caperino and Peperone, aka Cap and Pep).
The collection of 12 designs, which will also go on display, has been crafted by several well-known designers and can be redeemed for same day purchases of HK$1,000 or more from two shops in the mall. The designers have also stretched the boundaries of umbrella design by creating one that folds up into a handbag.
The graphical representations of Cap and Pep are the work of Olivier Kuntzel and Florence Deygas known for their clever title sequence of the film Catch Me If You Can, in which we enjoy the ups and downs of con man Frank Abagnale played by Leonardo DiCaprio. The animated sequence they created hinting at what is to come in the movie about the shifty character, has been compared to animations for Pink Panther movies.
